Plastic Vs Wire Crate

WHY WE RECOMMEND PLASTIC KENNELS VS. WIRE KENNELS

by Duke Furgusson

Buying a kennel for your dog? Don't know what kind to get?

Many people think the wire ones are the best choice as the dog will be able to see more out of it. However, there are some cons to consider if you have a dog that suffers from reactivity, nervousness, or separation anxiety.

Here’s a list of reasons why we recommend plastic kennels for these types of dogs:

?? If any kennel is guaranteed to be easy to break out with minimal effort it’s the wire ones. Plastic crates are no guarantee either for the VERY determined dogs, but they are generally more sturdy than wire kennels and many dogs will try but then give up. Not saying it can’t be done...but it will require more effort.

?? You might think the wire kennel is more humane since the dog can see out of it on all sides but for a nervous dog this lack of coverage will leave them feeling exposed and on display which can make them feel unsafe. Are you a person who sleeps with your bedroom door closed? I know I feel better sleeping with the door shut and not open for everyone to see me. Privacy feels safe. It’s why we close blinds on our windows at night.

?? When dogs sleep they want to know their six is protected. Most of my board & trains sleep at the back of the kennel with their bum against the back safely hidden from any threat that may approach from behind. This is not possible in a wire kennel, they are constantly exposed on all sides.

?? Plastic kennels are way easier to clean. Maybe not now...but someday you may come home to explosive diarrhea or projectile vomit alllllll over every wire. Oh, and it’s winter and you can’t use your hose to spray it down. Yep, you’re cleaning each wire plus all the stuff that sprayed out through the sides and allllll over your floor and walls.

?? Wire kennels are noisy! If I gotta be in a kennel I don’t want some rickety thing that makes noise every move I make. How annoying is it for you when your bed starts to wear out and it’s creaking all the time? It’s annoying for the dog and the people in the house trying to sleep or have some quiet time.

?? Let me tell you about the time I had Lucy the GSD in a wire kennel in my house when I wasn’t home. It was next to a wall with my very expensive Deuter backpack hanging there. Lucy got bored and somehow got a strap from the bag into the kennel then pulled it in and chewed her way through half of it. Not to mention she could have ingested something unsafe. No more using owners wire kennels after that!

?? And lastly, the risk of injury to a dog is high while trying to get out of a wire kennel. If a wire breaks the dog can be impaled.

Injuries can happen breaking out of any kennel so please...spend the time kennel training your dog with positive reinforcement and markers. We can teach you how to accomplish this!

Kennels are necessary for some dogs same as cribs are necessary for babies. For some dogs escape-proof kennels are necessary. Brands such as Zinger Winger and Gunner Kennels are two that we recommend.

We’re not saying wire kennels are a bad choice for all dogs, just some dogs.

Above all, seek out professional guidance to assist you with kennel training, teaching your dog to love the kennel with no fear, and settle in there quietly.
